Talk title: “Bridging the Gaps in Data Science between Academia and Industry”

Talk Summary
In this talk, Dr. Li will focus on identifying and closing gaps between data science programs at universities and industry needs. He will also cover the current trends in data science applications from a tech company perspective.

Biography
Dr. Ming Li is currently a Research Scientist at Amazon. He organized and presented the 2018 JSM Introductory Overview Lecture: Leading Data Science: Talent, Strategy, and Impact. He was the Chair of Quality & Productivity Section of ASA (American Statistical Association) for 2017. He was a Data Scientist at Walmart and a Statistical Leader at General Electric Global Research Center before joining Amazon. He obtained his PhD in Statistics from Iowa State University in 2010. With an in-depth statistics background and a few years of experience in data science, Dr. Li has trained and mentored numerous junior data scientists with different backgrounds such as statisticians, software developers, database administrators and business analysts. Dr. Li is also an Instructor at Amazon’s internal Machine Learning University and was one of the key founding members of Walmart’s Analytics Rotational Program, which bridges the skills gap between new hires and productive data scientists.
